Kūmānu positioning, messaging and website

A legacy business repositioned for the future

Nelmac, Kūmānu Environmental approached Downing with a clear brief: they needed a new website. They were straddling two brands and trying to make sense of their services as they shifted their focus to the future. But as we dug deeper, it became clear the challenge wasn’t just digital — it was foundational.

Downing transitioned the legacy built by Nelmac to Kūmānu. The business evolved through brand development and strategic messaging. The results brought together a diverse range of services across landscape, environmental, and water as one unified story.

“Downing brought strategic insight, creativity, and structure to what could have been a complex process. Their work has given Kūmānu a strong, confident brand foundation that we can build on. Internally, it created clarity and pride. Externally, it has strengthened how we connect with stakeholders, partners, and our wider community.”

“The team at Downing took the time to understand Kūmānu, our values, and our aspirations, and consistently went above and beyond. We highly recommend Downing to any organisation seeking a strategic, capable, and committed brand partner.”

Big Nature Thinking

Through a series of strategic sessions, Downing worked with the Kūmānu team to establish a clear messaging platform — defining their positioning, voice, and ultimately their new tagline: Big Nature Thinking. A simple but powerful articulation of who they are today — a team of designers and doers working together with purpose.

An evolved identity

With this foundation in place, we moved into brand development — evolving the visual identity to match the scale and ambition of the business. This included refining colour, art direction, and developing a cohesive photographic style.

Photography played a critical role in the identity. It captures both the scale of the environments Kūmānu works within — from mountains to coastline — and the capability of the people delivering the work. The result is a visual language that feels bold, intelligent, and deeply connected to nature.

A website built to connect

We designed and built a new website to bring the brand to life and connect their future clients to their services. The site balances clarity with depth, communicating complex, integrated services in a way that is accessible, confident, and future-focused. Case studies show the links between services and the true capability of Kūmānu’s Big Nature Thinking.

Brand launch event planning and management

To complete the transition, Downing also supported the launch of Kūmānu — planning and delivering an event that marked the shift from Nelmac to Kūmānu and introduced the new brand to market.

The results

A cohesive brand system — from communication, to visuals, to experience — positioning Kūmānu as a unified, forward-thinking organisation.
