Can AI Build a Website — And Should it?

Lilly Downing

“Can we get AI to build the website?” is a really good question—and one we’re hearing more often.
The short answer is that AI can absolutely help build websites. It’s very good at generating layouts, writing draft copy, producing code, and getting something functional online quickly.
Where it falls short is in the areas that actually make a website feel premium and deliver strong business results.
Strategy, Creativity & Experience
The difference comes down to strategy, creativity, judgement, and delivering an experience that is unique to your brand.
A premium website isn’t just a collection of pages; it’s a carefully structured experience designed to:
- communicate your value clearly
- build trust quickly
- guide visitors toward taking action
That requires understanding your customers, your market position, and what makes your brand distinctive. These strategic decisions shape everything that follows—messaging, site structure, hierarchy of information, and design language.
We see this in practice on projects like Olive Estate, a lifestyle village we worked with. The challenge wasn’t simply to redesign a website but to shift perception—from promoting homes to communicating a way of life. That thinking carried through everything: the tone of voice, visual identity, art-directed photography, and the structure of the website itself.
The result is a cohesive, story-led experience that feels personal and grounded in place—something AI can’t replicate, because it doesn’t define underlying narratives or translate strategy into a consistent, considered brand experience. Instead, AI works by recognising and averaging patterns it has seen before, which is why AI-generated websites tend to look competent but generic, often resembling the same modern SaaS-style templates.
Where human designers and strategists add real value is in the decisions behind the work:
- Is the website design consistent with the marketing strategy?
- What does a potential customer need to understand in the first 10 seconds?
- How should the story of your business unfold across the site?
- What visual style signals quality and differentiates you?
- How should the structure guide visitors toward enquiry or purchase?
These decisions determine whether a website simply exists online—or actively helps grow the business.
AI as a Tool, Not the Driver
There are many small but important details that contribute to a premium website experience: typography, spacing, hierarchy, interaction design, accessibility, performance, and overall brand cohesion.
Individually, they seem minor. Together, they create the difference between something that feels templated and something that feels considered and high-quality.
On Wilder, a premium seafood brand we worked with, this extended well beyond visual design into how the site behaves. The experience was built with custom interaction patterns—subtle hover states, animations that connect sections, and scroll behaviour designed to guide the user through the story.
These are not off-the-shelf features—they’re designed and developed specifically for the project. They require intention, iteration, and a clear understanding of how design and development come together to shape the overall experience.
We do use AI in parts of the process—but as a tool, not the driver. It can:
- speed up certain tasks
- generate options
- assist with development
The strategic thinking, creative direction, and final decisions still come from experienced people.
A useful analogy is architecture: AI can help draw a building quickly, but you would still want an architect to design it if you want it to be well planned, distinctive, and built to last.
Why Not Fully Rely on AI
Currently, no AI system can perfectly translate design into production-ready code without human input. It will always require refinement, fixes, and oversight.
In many cases, you may spend more time trying to get AI to produce exactly what you want than having a developer build it properly from the start.
AI can generate webpages and content from prompts, but the results often feel:
- blocky
- generic
- overly simple
Because it relies on large datasets, it tends to lack the authenticity and cohesion needed to successfully combine strategy, creativity, and quality into a premium website experience.
While AI tools can quickly assemble pages, they currently struggle to produce:
- cohesive, interaction-led front-end systems
- refined animation that feels intentional rather than decorative
- clean, production-ready code for complex behaviours
For premium work, much of the time is spent refining:
- architecture
- styling
- interactions (forms, animations, hover states)
These details are what elevate a website from good to premium—something AI still struggles to achieve, especially for bespoke sites.
Final Thought
Our goal isn’t simply to produce a website. It’s to create a digital experience that reflects the quality of your business and works hard to attract and convert the right customers.
Our ideal client really values the products they produce. They’ve spent years becoming experts in their field to create something they’re proud of—whether that’s Australian barramundi, plumbing expertise, world-class apples, Marlborough oysters, or financial advice.
Fundamentally, the question becomes:
How much are you willing to trust an AI website generator to accurately represent the quality of your business?
