Burton Music School
A bold brand identity for a Nelson music school that builds bands

Overview
It’s always a pleasure to work with fellow creatives. When Elijah Burton approached Downing to rebrand his music school, we found a business with a genuinely different offer—and lots of opportunity to communicate it.
Music tuition in Nelson Tasman is an unassuming, traditional category. Established academies on one side, one-person private tutors on the other, and Burton Music School needed to look like neither.
Elijah needed an identity that would win over two audiences at once: the kids who play, and the parents who pay.
Scope

"Burton Music School doesn't just teach music. It builds bands."

The Strategy
Belonging through bands
Most music schools teach one student, one instrument, one hour at a time. Burton Music School puts kids in bands from day one. That model is the whole business. Students learn empathy, timing, and communication by playing with other people—and they stick with it, because music is better with mates. What Elijah sells isn’t lessons. It’s confidence, belonging, and a set of life skills that outlast the chords.
So we built the positioning around it: a modern, band-based music school that helps kids rediscover music, confidence, and belonging.
The Creative
A wordmark with a bit of grit
The risk with design aimed at children is the tendency to slide into primary-school clichés—primarily colours or cartoon mascots.
We went the other way, to evoke a vibe and feeling. The wordmark uses abstract interpretations of musical instruments built into the letterforms, giving it personality and artistic appeal without a single ‘icon’ logo.
Set in heavy, rounded lettering, it reads more record sleeve than school newsletter.
Rather than childlike soft palettes with lots of colours, we opted for a stronger singular colour. Sunshine yellow, tempered with black. Loud enough to be seen from the street, grounded enough that a parent takes it seriously. It brings edginess, but also stays happy and approachable.
Strong, energetic, and simple. The result reads like a band poster, instead of a brochure.
The Deliverables
Built for a small business to run itself
A brand is only worth what a business can actually do with it. Elijah runs a small business, not a marketing department, so the work had to keep paying off long after we handed it over.
We set him up with the full foundation—logo suite, colour, type, and rules for using them—so he could build his own website and produce his own signage without coming back to an agency for every asset.
Strategically driven, affordably delivered, and genuinely his to run.
Branding for small businesses
Launching or rebranding a small business takes more than a template-generated Canva logo. It takes a brand the owner can carry forward on their own.
Downing works with independent businesses across Nelson Tasman and New Zealand to build identities that are strategically grounded and practical to apply.
From naming and positioning to logo design and rollout, we help small businesses look like the real thing from day one.
